Tips for trips in Czech Paradise

Dvùr Králové ZOO - 12 km

Meet Europe's largest collection of African wildlife. Take a genuine African Safari and see herds of antelopes, zebras and wildebeest from a double-decker bus. If this isn't enough, you can always find out more by going behind the scenes. For example, we arrange special experience programmes that provide a fascinating insight on the animals and the zoo.
The town of Dvùr Králové nad Labem lies 40 km north of Hradec Králové, the regional capital in a district called Královéhradecký kraj in Czech. The zoo is located in the west of the town.

Kumburk Castle - 8 km

At the beginning of the 14th century, the noble family of Vartemberk ordered the building of a castle on the cone-like hill near Nová Paka, it was originally called Goldenberk or Kolmburk, today`s Kumburk.
Because of massive renovation work, we do not know much about the original look of the castle. At the northeastern side, there are remnants of probably a walled fortification that may have been developed along the whole core structure. The fortification to protect against cannon attack is one of the best examples of the efforts made in the mid 15th century to protect places in an active way. From 1621 Kumburk was in the possession of Albrecht of Valdštejn. After his death, the castle changed hands several times and then, after 1658, Kumburk was nearly destroyed. In spite of that, nowadays it belongs among our most interesting castles.

Interesting note:

The plaque installed at the site mentions a visit of Karel Hynek Mácha (A great Czech poet who loved this region) at the castle.

Access:

The shortest way is from the railway station in Syøenov, along the yellow trail (3km). Other alternatives are Nová Paka and Stará Paka (4km) or the popular red tourist trail from Ploužnice (7km). If you set out by car from Jièín,go towards Lomnice, and after Valdice, near the village of Tìšín, turn to Sobìraz, to the forests of Bradlec via Kumburský Újezd to the restaurant named Na Klepandì.
The castle is open for a free tour. You can book a guide in advance.

Trosky Castle - 25 km

The twin towers of Trosky castle are one of the most recognisable symbols of the Czech Paradise (Cesky raj)

Trosky

owes its distinctive shape to volcanic events in the Tertiary period and thousands of years of erosion.

On two columns just like that, a nobleman named Èenek of Vartemberk constructed a castle between 1380 and 1390. Like most castles it changed owners several times throughout the centuries, and during the thirty years war, fell into the hands of the powerful aristocrat and general,
Albrecht of Valdštejn.

In the final year of the war, 1648, the castle was attacked by Swedish troops and caught fire. It was abandoned and laid in ruins until the 20th century, when restoration work began.

The towers are nicknamed the maiden and the hag. Predictably, the hag is the shorter and squatter of the two, while the maiden is the taller and more slender.

You can climb both towers. There's a viewing platform at the maiden's rocky base, but the hag's staircases go all the way to the top. I'm sure you can imagine how spectacular the views are.

Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), - 25 km

Dolomite Caves in Bozkov - 35 km

The dolomite caves in Bozkov are a favourite tourist destination and belong among the most frequently visited places in Èeský Ráj. Because of the length of over 1,000 metres, it is the largest known cave system in northeastern Bohemia. The caves are characterized by abundant silica banks, ledges and natural bars, with rich stalactite and stalagmite decorations. The top part of the tour is water areas comprising little lakes, with the largest underground lake in Bohemia with limpid blue-and-green water at the very end.

The existence of the underground space in Bozkov was revealed by accident, by a blast in a small dolomite quarry in 1947. The caves were made accessible to the public in 1968. They were declared a national natural monument in 1999. As the temperature in the caves varies around 7-8°C and the tour takes approximately 45 minutes, it is recommended to wear warm clothes.

Treasury of Gem stones in Nová Paka - 7 km

In the picturesque landscape looking like rolling waves on the sea, in a small valley in red fields there lies a small town - Nová Paka. People here have always been poor but nature tried to help them with its beauty and also with plenty of precious stones and fossilized rests of Permo-carboniferous forests which can be found here.

The exposition came into existence thanks to school and private collections in the 19th century. The new building of the “Treasury“ was opened in the spring of 1996. In 1997 the Exposition of Spiritism was founded in the attic of this building.

In the Treasury of Gem stones there is a gallery of various minerals and history of jewellery manufacturing in our region. Gem stones are situated according to their finding places and varieties. You can see there huge amount of polished agates, amethysts, crystals, jaspers, garnets...

Czech Paradise – Prachovské Skály- 25 km

Visit beautiful rock towns in Èeský Ráj (Czech Paradise).
The Prachovské Skály nature preserve is one of the most popular regions in the Czech Republic. It is one of the oldest nature preserves in the country.

The area was declared a nature preserve in 1933. In 2002, the efforts made by conservationists resulted in incorporation of the Prachovské Skály Nature Preserve in the Èeský Ráj Protected Landscape Area. It is recommended to
start a tour round the Prachovské Skály from Jièín, an ancient town with a well-preserved central square and numerous historic monuments. The Prachovské Skály are some 6 km far from Jièín, in the direction towards Sobotka, via Holín and Prachov. There are two car parks at the entrance points.

The short round tour is led through a narrow, only 35 cm wide rock gap; from there, you approach two best-known lookout points and return through the Císaøská Chodba between robust rock blocks. The tour takes about 3/4 hour.

The long round will take you along seven lookout points, you climb various staircases carved in the rocks and squeeze through narrow gaps between huge stones. The tour is 3.5 km long and it takes approximately 2.5 hours.

Kost Castle, - 35 km

There are not many medieval castles in Czech Republic. Majesic Kost has a special position amongst bohemian castles – it is the best preserved gothic castle in Czech Republic. Although Karlštejn is probably better known and it has more important place in Czech history, from its original appearence has not remained much today. Kost castle that stands in the middle of picturesque Èeský ráj looks pretty much the same for half of the millenium. Reconstruction that took place in 50ties did not take away the charming atmosphere of the castle.

A sightseeing takes about 50 minutes. Normal entrance fee is 90 Kè, discounted (for children, seniors and disabled persons) 60 Kè. You will get to know something about a history of the castle, you will see a courtyard, a chapell, castle palaces and black kitchen.

Zvièina Lookout Tower, - 7 km

Come and feast your eyes on a wonderful view with a history. The unique lookout tower with rotating dome near Raisova chata (Rais’ cottage) at the summit of Zvièina is coming to life after a break of several years. And if you think it is strange why the view of the Giant Mountains is overgrown, believe us, this is no accident.

Besedice – sandstone rock towns – 25 km

Besedice area is another stunning place in Czech Paradise full of beautiful sandstone rocks. It is a place of magical atmosphere and inspiring natural beauty. There are numerous routes which lead you through the rock town and where you can appreciate romantic views as well as squeeze through mysterious rocky passages.

Kozákov Lookout Tower, - 20 km

Kozákov peak, with its 744 m above sea level the highest mountain in the Bohemian Paradise. Since 1928, the peak tourist lodge located Rieger, and since 1993 there is metal tower, which the gallery height of 24 meters is used
as a lookout.

In addition to the vision and the Czech Paradise Pojizeri opens round view from the Czech Central Mountains through the Giant, Ješted ridge, Giant Mountains, Giant, Broumovsko Highlands, Eagle Mountain to the spurs of the highlands. In nice weather, then you can see up to a quarter of Bohemia, and a telescope can be seen on the horizon and the highest building in Prague.

Malá Skála – Czech Paradise – 25 km

There are plenty of beautiful places in Czech Republic you should visit on your travels. One of them is a little place called Mala Skala (Malá Skála) located in a protected area called Bohemian Paradise. Mala Skala is often called the Pearl of Bohemian Paradise because of the great amounts of natural beauties and cultural wealth.

Dry Rocks

Dominant sandstone cliffs towering above the valley is a must see place. It is also a very popular place for rock climbers as the rock here is high-quality sandstone with round edges, finger holes and good friction. However it is also accessible on foot to certain height without any rock climbing and still offering great views.

Vranov – Pantheon

Established in early 15th century is considered one of the longest rock castles in Czech Republic. It has an easy access on foot or again if you enjoy rock climbing knock your self out. This castle offers great views and in summer months there is a little kiosk open offering coffee, beer etc.

Frýdštejn Castle – 25 km

The preserved ruin of a rock castle rises above the valley of the Jizera River. The typical watch tower is a beautiful dominant feature of the Maloskalsko area.

The castle was in part carved in the rock and the limited space made the builders create a structure consisting of several storeys. The defence was provided by the bulwark in which a large round tower was incorporated.

Another round tower was built in the area in front of the castle. Frýdštejn Castle was used by filmmakers for the settings of the popular tale Jasnìnka the Princess and the Flying Shoemaker – the scenes from the witch tower were shot right here.

Les Království Reservoir – Bílá Tøemešná - 9 km

Impressive and architecturally beautiful dam in Czech is located 2km from the village of Bila Tremesna Dvur Kralove on the Labe River, resulting in the Krkonose at an altitude (1386 m) in peat Labe meadows.

The main reason for the status of this dam was then a hundred water that swept through this territory in 1897 and took everything from me Vrchlabi over to Dvur Kralove and Pardubice.

Each side of the dam gate consisting of two towers, the length of the dam is 218 meters and a height of 41 meters. On the left side away from the entrance, there is an house and interesting towers topped with battlements. Below the dam was finished in 1923 hydroelectric power plant.

Dam Les Kralovstvi / Tesnov Dam is a national technical monument.

Aquapark Jièín - 17 km

Leisure centre and Aquapark Jièín offers indoor swimming pool (25 m x 8 m), swimming pool for children, a big toboggan, steam room as well as whirlpools and other attractions. It is a great place for family fun situated in the heart of a beautiful historical town of Jièín.

Bowling Jilemnice, - 20 km

Visit Jilemnice – a town which lies nearby Pecka offers great facilities for bowling and billiard lovers as well as wide offer of drinks and refreshments in a local bowling centre.

Žalý Benecko Krkonoše – The Giant Mountains, - 27 km

Žalý Benecko Krkonoše is a part of the Giant Mountains region with its highest peak called Žalý. A local lookout tower can offer you stunning views of the mountains. The area is also well known for its great conditions for cross country skiing as well as downhill skiing.
